Since October 14, Microsoft has discontinued support for various software. What are your options as a user and administrator?
As warned, Microsoft has done a major cleanup of its software offerings. Several older versions of Windows, Exchange, and Office are no longer supported since October 14. Much has been written about the end of support for Windows 10, but that’s just one of the concerns IT administrators may now be facing.
These Microsoft products are no longer supported since October 14, 2025:
- Windows 10
- Windows 11 22H2 (Enterprise & Education)
- Office 2016/2019
- Exchange Server 2016/2019
- Skype for Business 2016/2019
- Visio 2016/2019
- Project 2016/2019
- Visual Studio 2015
Now what?
Many Windows users have undoubtedly asked themselves this question this week. Although the end of support was announced well in advance by Microsoft, procrastination is human nature, and many users continued to hold out until the last day. This is not always a matter of not wanting to, but sometimes also of not being able to due to hardware limitations.

Windows 10 Reaches End of Support: What Now?
For Microsoft, the solution is obvious: switch to supported versions. This ensures that your device will continue to receive new features and, more importantly, security updates in the future. Windows 10 users in Europe have been given a lifeline by Microsoft in the form of one year of free extended support (1 year) or paid support (3 years).
Users of Exchange and Skype for Business have also been given a six-month extension until April 2026. These software packages have been on artificial life support for some time. For Exchange and Skype, there will eventually be no choice but to switch to a subscription.
For Office 2016 and 2019, Microsoft has no plans to throw a lifeline. Those still using these versions will either have to switch to a 365 subscription (with or without Copilot) or move to Office 2024 LTSC if they prefer a one-time license. Keep in mind now that Microsoft will discontinue this Office version in 2029.
