After repeated postponements, Microsoft is launching Recall in the Dev channel of Windows 11, with even a bonus.

Microsoft is proud to announce the launch of Preview Build 26120.2415 for Windows 11. The preview is aimed at Windows users with a Copilot+ PC with Qualcomm Snapdragon X chip. They can get started with the Recall feature starting today if they register as Windows Insider.

Recall has a long history before its launch . Had it depended on Microsoft, the feature would have been launched much earlier. Recall takes screenshots of your PC at regular time intervals with the intention that you can search for information in those screenshots, with the help of an AI-driven search function.

Safer

Security experts were not particularly enthusiastic about the announcement, and Recall ran into resistance almost immediately. Microsoft necessarily shelved Recall to make the feature more secure. Thus, Recall has been made optional and you will have to enable the feature manually.

Screenshots are only stored locally with your device and you can secure them with a PIN or Windows Hello. Recall also offers ways to deny access to apps and websites. Microsoft hopes to finally get Recall through with these interventions.

Click and do

The preview version introduces another AI extra on top of Recall: Click to Do. This feature is similar to Google’s Circle to Search. It can be used within Recall as well as in other applications and Web browsers.

Click to Do can recognize text and objects in images when you select them. Then you can perform AI-driven actions on the selected object. These range from searches to cut-and-paste functions or even editing the image in Photos or Paint.

For both Recall and Click to Do, for now, it is offered only on Copilot+ devices with a Qualcomm Snapdragon X chip. Microsoft soon plans to support Intel and AMD devices that meet the Copilot label as well.
