Privacy Sandbox is coming to Android. New solutions to advertising that better ensure online privacy will thus have a place in Android mobile applications. The initiative will take several years to complete.
Android users will find millions of applications in the Play Store. Many of them are also free to install. Only free is not always free, but you regularly pay by giving away some personal data.
Privacy Sandbox
Privacy Sandbox believes digital ads can be different. The initiative was launched by Chrome in 2019 to increase users’ online privacy. The technologies needed to do this are still being developed. These technologies all have the same goals in mind:
- Prevent tracking when a user uses the Internet.
- Making sites profitable in a sustainable way.
- Preserving the open web.
Android
Today Anthony Chavez, VP of Product Management at Android, announced that Privacy Sandbox will make an appearance on Android. It increases privacy for users and that without being detrimental to advertisers. It is important within Privacy Sandbox that developers and companies get the “right” tools to successfully advertise on mobile. The right tools then refers to tools that do not go too far in collecting personal information, but collect just enough to see relevant ads.
Building in the Privacy Sandbox will take several years. Chavez clarifies how that will work: “While we design, build and test these new solutions, we plan to support the existing features of the ad platform for at least two years, and we plan to provide significant notice prior to future changes.”
Developers test audience
Chavez calls on enthusiasts to contribute their thoughts on Privacy Sandbox: “We know this initiative needs input from the entire industry to succeed.”
Developers can immediately weigh in on the initiative. Technical documentation is in the public domain, and previews will roll out to developers throughout the year. At the end of 2022, Android plans to launch the beta version.
