Synology is now making its previously introduced ActiveProtect solution generally available. Under that banner, Synology is for the first time putting a pure focus on backups. No DSM, no extra gadgets, everything is in one compact web interface under the name ActiveProtect Manager.
At Computex, Synology introduced ActiveProtect, and now on the sidelines of CES, the Taiwanese manufacturer is making the solution generally available. ActiveProtect is dedicated backup environment that focuses on protecting data in critical infrastructure. Key focus points for the brand: speed, ease of use and cost-effectiveness.
ActiveProtect allows rapid scalable deployment of additional backup space, both at the edge and in data centers. Everything is centrally managed through a Web interface with a scalable operating system on the backend. Load balancing is done automatically within the network of devices. According to Synology, it takes no more than 10 minutes to configure a new node.
ActiveProtect exists as a rack solution with the 2U DP7400 server. That server has room for ten 20 TB HDDs and two 2.5-inch SSDs from Synology. It is powered for an AMD Epyc 7272 server chip and has 64 GB of RAM on board. Synology provides two 10 GbE ports and one classic 1 GbE port for management.

There are also two Tower servers called DP450 and DP320. Those have space for four 8 TB HDDs and two 8 TB HDDs, respectively. The DP450 also has room for two 400 GB M.2 SSDs and comes equipped with one 10 GbE port and one 1 GbE port for management. The DP320 has only two 1 GbE RJ45 ports. For these servers, Synology opts for a more modest AMD Ryzen Embedded R1600 processor. The units have 16 GB and 8 GB of RAM on board.
Across the network of devices, ActiveProtect allows you to rely on source-side deduplication to speed up backups. This way, you reduce bandwidth usage across multiple backup servers. In total, you can deploy up to 2,500 servers and backup 150,000 endpoint devices and cloud accounts.

Synology ActiveProtect is compatible with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware, Windows Server and Linux, Mac and Windows, Nutanix and NetApp, and supports SQL databases and Oracle.
ActiveProtect comes with a one-year license. Synology does not share target prices, but refers potential customers to resellers or asks them to get in touch. How inexpensive ActiveProtect may or may not be is therefore difficult for us to judge at launch.
