Microsoft will invest $10 billion in an AI data center hub in Sines, Portugal, over the coming years.

Microsoft plans to invest $10 billion in a data center in Portugal. Microsoft President Brad Smith announced this to the Negócios newspaper. “This investment is larger than all data investments the company has ever made in Spain,” he clarified in the interview. The technology giant is collaborating with Start Campus and Nscale, and plans to install around 12,600 Nvidia chips. The data center will run entirely on renewable energy.

Small Coastal City

Sines in Portugal wasn’t chosen by accident. This coastal city is well on its way to becoming a magnet for investors. Start Campus has already begun construction of a new data center on the site.

Nvidia Chips

For the construction of the data center, Microsoft is collaborating with British company Nscale, which specializes in AI data centers, and Portuguese company Start Campus, which has already started building a new data center. The tech giant plans to install 12,600 Nvidia chips in the data center.

“Portugal is an important country in Europe for building these types of data centers and making these kinds of investments,” Smith says in the interview. Moreover, the data center will run entirely on renewable energy.
