OpenAI’s AI agent will reportedly be available in preview from January 2025.
OpenAI is working on an autonomous AI agent codenamed Operator, The Verge knows. The company reportedly plans to roll out this tool in preview in January.
Chasing the competition
Gartner named AI agents as one of the most important technology trends of 2025. Many companies are already working on their own AI agents, such as LinkedIn, Salesforce and Snowflake. Exactly when Operator will be rolled out is unknown for now, but its development points to a crucial shift toward autonomous AI systems.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said a few weeks ago that AI agents are going to become “mainstream. Although these assistants have been in development for years, the latest major language models allow AI agents to have smoother and more natural conversations.
Operator will be able to perform tasks inside a Web browser. That sounds similar to Google’s Project Jarvis. That AI model can independently read Web sites, interpret screenshots, press buttons and enter text: in other words, be able to surf the Web as a person would.
