Nutanix adds hybrid support for Azure Virtual Desktop

Nutanix will support Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop on its Nutanix Cloud Platform for hybrid environments.

Nutanix’s Cloud Platform solution will support Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop for hybrid environments. This allows organizations to run Azure Virtual Desktop on-premises on the Nutanix AHV hypervisor, with Azure as the brokering and management layer.

The expansion targets organizations that want to deploy and manage virtual desktops more flexibly in a hybrid model. IT teams get additional infrastructure choices while being able to continue using existing Microsoft licenses and their Nutanix environment.

Azure Virtual Desktop

With the new support, customers can run Azure Virtual Desktop locally on Nutanix AHV, while the brokering and management stack continues to run in Azure via Azure Arc-compatible servers. This keeps central control in the Azure environment while running desktops close to the user.

According to Nutanix, the combination is suitable for sectors such as financial services, healthcare, and government. Data and workloads remain on-premises while organizations still benefit from Azure Virtual Desktop and integration with other Microsoft services.

Nutanix states that the Cloud Platform should provide an infrastructure foundation for VDI workloads focused on control and predictable performance. Microsoft emphasizes that customers now have more choice in where they run virtual desktops, without departing from the existing security and licensing model around Microsoft 365, Teams, and Windows.
