Apple is ending support for its iCloud services for Apple devices running iOS 8 or older.
As of Dec. 18, 2024, users with an iOS 8 device or older will no longer be able to back up their iPhones or iPads to iCloud, Mac Rumors reports. Apple announced on its support page that users will still be able to manually back up their devices on a Mac or a Windows PC, however.
iOS 8 or older
Users with iOS 5 to 8 devices will no longer be able to create backups in iCloud starting Dec. 18, 2024. In addition, Apple is also removing all existing iCloud backups from those devices. Some Apple users were told this via an email from Apple. Apple says it is doing this to better align with its published minimum software requirements.
Manual
Apple explains on its support page how users with iOS 8 or older can still back up. This can include backing up through iTunes, Apple devices (Windows 10 and 11) and Finder (macOS Catalina and newer), or simply updating to iOS 9, if your device allows it.
