AI computing power is growing exponentially fast, but it is not yet certain whether that growth will continue.

The demand for AI computing power grows by a factor of four every year, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said during an interview. He pointed out that this increasing need has led to a million-fold increase in AI computing power over the past decade. Nvidia’s part in this has been invaluable, according to Huang, writes Tom’s Hardware.

Affordable computing power

Huang stated that Nvidia has dramatically reduced the cost of AI computations, which has helped make machine learning more accessible and developed. “Without Nvidia, AI systems would be a million times more expensive. Compared to that, what we offer is practically free,” Huang joked.

Although Nvidia GPUs are quite expensive, Huang emphasized that their advances have been essential to the success of AI. Thanks to affordable computing power, researchers can now process large data sets without budgetary concerns.

About the future, however, Huang remained cautious: growing computing needs will continue to rise, but whether this will increase by another million times over the next decade, he left in the middle. What is certain is that Nvidia will continue to play an important role in enabling AI innovation.
