AMD Acquires AI Startup Brium to Improve AI Performance

AMD is attempting to strengthen its position in the AI hardware market with this acquisition.

AMD has acquired the software company Brium. Brium’s expertise is expected to help AMD improve performance on its hardware, according to TechCrunch.

More Flexibility for AI Developers

Brium develops software that allows AI models to run more efficiently on various hardware, including AMD’s own Instinct GPUs. According to AMD, Brium’s technology will be particularly useful in sectors such as healthcare, finance, and manufacturing, where AI models often require specific optimization.

Nvidia currently dominates the AI hardware market, partly because much AI software runs on Nvidia GPU “s. With Brium, AMD aims to break that dependency. It has been trying to do this for a while with its own Instinct GPU” s. For instance, AMD’s own Instella AI models run on these. However, the GPUs still face many software compatibility issues. “We want to build a powerful, open AI ecosystem that stimulates innovation,” AMD states.

Applications in Multiple Sectors

With Brium, AMD now brings in technology and expertise that can make it easier for AI developers to consider alternatives to Nvidia hardware. Whether AMD can really make a difference with this remains to be seen.
